Mary Litwhiler lived in Hackettstown for 47 years. While living there, she volunteered on many committees and was instrumental in declaring the historic area a “Historic District” in Hackettstown. She started the Victorian house tours from 2003 to 2008, bringing hundreds of visitors into Hackettstown.

Mary spent 20 years with the Recreation Commission and started the first “Decorate the House Contest”. She served two years on the Zoning Board and served on the Board of Education where she fought for smaller class sizes and helped write curriculum.

Mary was also instrumental in starting the Maintenance Street Committee creating ideas to move Hackettstown forward. She was also involved with the first Hackettstown BID. She worked with others to put the existing program in place and develop what was needed to become an official organization. Mary worked on Streetscape getting building owners to fix up buildings and areas around them. She planned new activities for Hackettstown and worked to involve stores and restaurants.

Mary worked on a committee for the very first St. Patrick’s Day parade and has been volunteering on the committee ever since. We are proud to announce her as our 2025 Grand Marshal.
